What the calibrated core shows

In May–June 1919, first-year Virginia high-school pupils had 30 minutes to write their best story about an exciting ride. The five selected scale points bracket a separately reported corpus median; they are not five random pupils.

Each excerpt coordinates at least four concrete units in chronological or causal order. Contingency, reversal, failed maneuvers, pursuit, decoy, and escape remain traceable even where spelling, agreement, or clause boundaries are irregular.

What the supplements add—and cannot add

Four seventh/eighth-grade pieces carry only an aggregate contemporary label of “just average—graded about Fair plus or Good.” Five ninth-grade-level themes were selected for textbook instruction with no surviving original score or prompt. Together they expose practical strategy, evaluation, analogy, reversals, and sensory craft.

They cannot establish how common those operations were. Removing all nine supplements leaves only the 1919 timed narrative finding; claims about form breadth disappear.

The expected bar

Contemporary documents name sentence correctness, spelling, punctuation, clarity, relevant emphasis, organization, logical conclusion, purpose, audience, selection, arrangement, unity, and interest. This was not merely a mechanics bar. It also does not show what every classroom teacher enforced.

Strongest limitations

• One state, one core prompt, and a historical high-school population unlike today’s.
• Typeset reproductions may hide original manuscript features.
• All anchors were selected for scale or instructional use.
• Actual writing years, conditions, and editorial histories are missing for the nine 1928 records.
• No authentic same-assignment classroom-teacher critique survives.
